What are Fixed Prostheses?
Fixed prostheses are the most commonly used prosthesis option among the prostheses applied today. In cases where a few teeth are missing in the mouth, they are the types of restorations we make by using neighboring teeth or implants.
They are prostheses that complete the features such as aesthetics, speech and function, which the patient loses due to tooth deficiency, in the closest way to nature. The most important factors in the success of the treatment are that the materials used for these prostheses have sufficient resistance to chewing force, aesthetic properties and good compatibility with biological tissues.
Fixed prostheses can be applied with or without metal support. While metal-supported fixed dentures show sufficient resistance to functional forces in the mouth, they cause aesthetic problems and in some cases may adversely affect the natural appearance. The most important reason for this is that the direct passage of light from the tooth is prevented by the metal.
Due to these disadvantages of metal-supported ceramic restorations, fracture-resistant ceramics have been developed. Especially zirconium is the most up-to-date material used in this field.
Correct indication is the most important step in a successful treatment. Respecting the knowledge and experience of the physician in the selection of the material to be used is necessary for the success of the treatment.
Can every tooth be used as a foot in bridge prosthesis?
Not every tooth can be used as a support tooth. These teeth should have long roots and good bone support.
Can it be used as a single tooth bridge foot?
Very rarely, it can be used in the restoration of lateral teeth using canines. This type of prosthesis is called winged bridge. The supporting tooth must have long roots and good bone support.
Are all bridges made with two abutment teeth?
The length of the edentulous space, the root length of the support teeth and the bone supports determine the number of support teeth to be used when making the bridge.
Can normal food be eaten with bridge prostheses?
With bridge prostheses, we can eat anything we can eat with our healthy teeth.
Do bridge prostheses cause bad breath?
A well-made prosthesis does not smell. Odor occurs in patients who do not have adequate oral hygiene due to the neglect of the prosthesis. Especially the lower parts of the bridge bodies should be cleaned very well. If there is swelling and bleeding in the gums around the bridge legs, a dentist should be consulted.
